ACNE SCARS · SCAR REVISION
LED BY DR. CHARLENE PALAFOX · PDS BOARD-CERTIFIED DERMATOLOGIST
OVERVIEW
Acne scars can leave lasting changes in skin texture. While skincare may help discoloration and mild surface changes, depressed scars often need procedures that address lost collagen or bands of tissue pulling the skin downward.
Different scars need different approaches. At Skinstitute, Dr. Charlene Palafox creates an intentional treatment plan based on your ice-pick, rolling, or boxcar scars, skin type, and recovery needs. Options include:
Targeted application of TCA inside selected deep, narrow scars to encourage localized healing and collagen remodeling.
Releases bands of tissue beneath tethered scars, particularly rolling scars, to help reduce the downward pull. Improvement develops as the area heals; repeat treatment may be needed.
Our acne-scar protocol combines Erbium Glass (Er:Glass) laser and RF microneedling to encourage collagen remodeling and gradually improve uneven texture.
Selected injectable treatments may complement scar procedures. Radiesse and JuveFirm (Juvelook) can stimulate collagen production, while RevitaSmooth (Rejuran S) is a polynucleotide skin booster that may help improve scar appearance and skin quality. They work differently and are selected according to your needs.
WHY IT WORKS
We do not believe in a one-size-fits-all approach. We select treatments that address different features of your scars, with realistic goals for gradual improvement.
01
Subcision addresses tethered scars, ScarCROSS targets selected deep, narrow scars, and laser/RF microneedling helps improve uneven texture. Your plan may combine these approaches when appropriate.
02
Releasing tethered tissue and encouraging collagen remodeling can make scars less noticeable over time. Improvement may be long-lasting, but complete removal and permanent results are not guaranteed.
03
We select treatment settings and aftercare with your skin tone and pigmentation risk in mind. Darker skin can develop post-treatment darkening, even with carefully planned treatment.
04
Biostimulators or skin boosters may be added when suitable for your scars. The product, placement, and expected benefits are discussed during your consultation.
05
We discuss expected redness, swelling, bruising, or scabbing before treatment. Your plan considers your schedule, although healing time varies and some combinations require more downtime.
06
Every procedure is performed by our PDS board-certified dermatologist, with careful assessment, treatment planning, and aftercare guidance.

FREQUENTLY ASKED
Treatment can make scars less noticeable, but complete removal is unlikely. Results vary with the scar type and your skin’s response.
Numbing cream or local anesthesia helps reduce discomfort. You may still feel heat, pressure, or stinging, depending on the procedure.
It depends on the treatment. Redness and swelling may last several days. ScarCROSS causes small scabs, and bruising after subcision or injections can last longer. Allow around one to two weeks for visible recovery from some combinations; discoloration may take longer to fade.
A series is usually needed. Your dermatologist will recommend the number and spacing based on your scars, treatment combination, and healing. Improvement develops over months.
